GPA Calculator for Singapore Universities

Singapore’s two flagship universities — the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) — both use a 5.0 GPA scale (NUS calls it the Cumulative Average Point, or CAP; NTU uses GPA). A+ and A both score 5.0; A− is 4.5; B+ is 4.0; the bands continue down to F at 0.

The 5.0 scale is unusual globally — most universities cap at 4.0 — and is shared across both NUS and NTU. The Singapore Management University (SMU) historically used 4.3 but has since aligned with NUS’s 5.0 system. Both NUS and NTU compute the cumulative score weighted by module credits (typically 4 modular credits per standard module).

Grading Systems Used in Singapore

NUS CAP & NTU GPA on the 5.0 scale

  • A+ / A = 5.0 (no A+ premium beyond A)
  • A− = 4.5
  • B+ = 4.0, B = 3.5, B− = 3.0
  • C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0
  • D+ = 1.5, D = 1.0, F = 0

CAP / GPA = Σ(grade point × modular credits) ÷ Σ(modular credits). The S/U option (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) lets students take selected modules pass-fail without affecting CAP.

Honours, Admissions & What the GPA Means

Honours classification at NUS & NTU

  • Honours (Highest Distinction): CAP ≥ 4.50 — top first-class equivalent. Awarded to the top few percent of the cohort.
  • Honours (Distinction): CAP ≥ 4.00 — first-class equivalent.
  • Honours (Merit): CAP ≥ 3.50 — second-class upper.
  • Honours: CAP ≥ 3.00 — second-class lower.
  • Pass / Pass with Merit: CAP ≥ 2.50.

Highest Distinction is generally required for direct PhD entry and for President’s Graduate Scholarship eligibility. Most graduate programmes worldwide treat NUS / NTU CAP 4.0+ as equivalent to a US 3.5+ GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions — Singapore

Is CAP the same as GPA?

Yes. CAP (Cumulative Average Point) is what NUS calls its GPA. Both are weighted averages of grade points by modular credits, on a 5.0 scale. NTU uses the term GPA but the calculation is identical.

What CAP is first-class honours at NUS?

CAP ≥ 4.50 is Honours (Highest Distinction), the top tier — equivalent to first class. CAP 4.00–4.49 is Honours (Distinction). Both qualify as first-class honours for international comparison.

How does a 5.0 CAP convert to US GPA?

Approximately: CAP 5.0 ≈ 4.0 GPA, CAP 4.5 ≈ 3.7, CAP 4.0 ≈ 3.5, CAP 3.5 ≈ 3.0. Most US grad schools treat NUS / NTU on a CAP scale and apply their own conversion. CAP 4.0+ from NUS is competitive at top US programmes.
