GPA Calculator for German Universities

Germany uses an inverted grading scale from 1.0 to 5.0 where 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the minimum pass. This is the opposite direction to the US 4.0 GPA, which causes confusion for students transferring abroad. A German overall mark of 1.7 (gut) is similar to a 3.3 US GPA.

The grade categories are: 1.0–1.5 sehr gut (very good), 1.6–2.5 gut (good), 2.6–3.5 befriedigend (satisfactory), 3.6–4.0 ausreichend (sufficient — pass), 4.1–5.0 nicht ausreichend (fail). Final degree marks are weighted by ECTS credits and the type of examination, with thesis grades typically weighted heavily.

Grading Systems Used in Germany

German grading and the modified Bavarian formula

German universities issue marks in increments such as 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.7 (the 1+/3 step system used by FU Berlin, Tübingen, Freiburg). Some universities (Stuttgart, Cologne, Bonn) issue only whole marks (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). LMU Munich and Heidelberg also publish verbal labels (sehr gut, gut, befriedigend) alongside numeric marks.

For US graduate-school applications, the modified Bavarian formula converts a German final mark to a US 4.0 GPA:

US GPA = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin)
where Nmax = 4.0 (worst pass), Nmin = 1.0 (best), and Nd = your final mark.

Worked example: a German final mark of 2.0 converts to 1 + 3 × (4 − 2) ÷ (4 − 1) = 1 + 2 = 3.0 GPA on a US 4.0 scale.

Honours, Admissions & What the GPA Means

Final marks, master’s admission, and stipend eligibility

  • Master’s admission (Germany): most consecutive master’s programmes require a bachelor final mark of 2.5 or better. Competitive programmes (TU Munich, LMU, Heidelberg, ETH Zurich for German applicants) ask for 2.0 or better.
  • Doctoral admission: usually a master’s with mark 2.0 or better; with distinction (mit Auszeichnung, ≤ 1.3) for funded research positions.
  • Sehr gut (very good) class: final mark 1.0–1.5. Awarded to roughly the top 10–20% depending on subject. Required for DAAD scholarships and Studienstiftung postdoc funding.
  • Promotion (PhD) summa cum laude: dissertation defended with mark 0.7–1.0. The minority of doctoral graduations.
  • US grad school: final mark 2.0 converts to ≈ 3.0 GPA; final mark 1.5 converts to ≈ 3.5 GPA; final mark 1.0 converts to a 4.0 GPA. Most US programmes ask for the WES or institution-specific evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Germany

What is a good grade in Germany?

1.0–1.5 (sehr gut) is excellent. 1.6–2.5 (gut) is solid and required for most master's admission. 2.6–3.5 (befriedigend) is the average passing range. 3.6–4.0 (ausreichend) is barely passing. Above 4.0 fails.

How do I convert a German grade to a US GPA?

Use the modified Bavarian formula: GPA = 1 + 3 × (4 − your_grade) ÷ (4 − 1). Example: a 1.7 German mark converts to 1 + 3 × (4 − 1.7) ÷ 3 = 3.3 US GPA. The formula maps 1.0 → 4.0, 2.0 → 3.0, 3.0 → 2.0, 4.0 → 1.0.

Why is the German scale reversed?

The 1.0–5.0 scale is rooted in 19th-century Prussian school grading, where teachers ranked work from rank 1 (highest) downward. The convention persisted through university reforms and remains opposite to the British/American convention.

What is "sehr gut" in GPA terms?

Sehr gut (very good) is awarded for marks 1.0–1.5 and corresponds to roughly 3.5–4.0 on a US 4.0 GPA scale. It's the top class and qualifies for most German scholarships and PhD direct entry.
