How the IITs Grade: 10-Point Scales Compared
All IITs compute SGPA/SPI and CGPA/CPI on a 10-point, credit-weighted scale — but the letter grades behind that number differ sharply between institutes. IIT Bombay awards double letters (AA = 10), IIT Madras runs S down to E, IIT Kanpur uses plain A–F in steps of two, and IIT Roorkee uses A+/A style. The tables below are verified against each institute's official ordinances and regulations.

Same formula, different names
Every IIT uses the same credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade point by its credits, sum, and divide by total credits. IIT Bombay calls the results SPI and CPI; most others say SGPA and CGPA. Most IITs grade courses relatively — grade boundaries depend on class performance, commonly set from the class mean and standard deviation — so identical percentages can earn different grades in different courses.
Converting IIT CGPA to a percentage

What is a good CGPA at an IIT?
Above 8.0 is generally considered strong, and 9.0+ is exceptional under relative grading. Requirements vary — many core placements screen around 7.0-7.5, and department change or honours thresholds are institute-specific.
Is 10 CGPA possible at an IIT?
Yes but rare — it requires the top grade (AA/AP, S, A or A+ depending on the institute) in every course. Relative grading typically caps the share of students receiving the top grade in each course.
