GPA Calculator for Indian Universities
Indian universities almost universally use a 10-point CGPA system, mandated by the UGC and AICTE since the credit-system reforms. The grade letters and exact point values vary by institution: IITs use letter grades like AA, AB, BB; NITs and Anna University use O, A+, A, B+, B; KTU uses O/A+/A/B+/B/C/P; and the Mumbai/Calcutta/Delhi state universities each have small variations.
For postgraduate admissions and government recruitment, the cumulative grade-point average is converted to a percentage. The most-cited formula is the AICTE recommendation: Percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5. Some institutions publish their own conversion (Anna University, KTU). The calculator on this site uses each university’s officially published grade values.
Grading Systems Used in India
Grading systems used at Indian universities
- 10-point CGPA, letter grades (most common) — O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0. Used by NITs, Anna University, KTU, BHU, Delhi University, and most state engineering universities.
- IIT Bombay / IIT Guwahati two-letter system — AA = 10, AB = 9, BB = 8, BC = 7, CC = 6, CD = 5, DD = 4, FF = 0. Same 10-point cumulative scale, different letter scheme.
- IIT Madras / IISc fine-grained scale — A+ = 10, A = 9, A− = 8.5 with half-points. Allows finer distinctions than the standard CGPA.
- BITS Pilani 10-point with letter — A = 10, A− = 9, B = 8, B− = 7, etc. with NC (no credit) for fail.
- KTU 10-point — O / A+ / A / B+ / B / C / P / F / FE. F and FE both count as 0 grade points but contribute to attempted credits.
- IIM 6-point CGPA (PGP) — IIM Ahmedabad uses AA = 6, AB = 5 etc., distinct from the 10-point undergraduate system.

Honours, Admissions & What the GPA Means
CGPA milestones, percentage conversion, and Indian classifications
Common Indian classifications based on final CGPA or percentage:
- First Class with Distinction: 7.5+/10 CGPA (or 75%+ percentage). Required for most public-sector jobs and competitive government exams.
- First Class: 6.5+/10 CGPA (or 60%+). Standard threshold for placements at most companies.
- Second Class: 5.5+/10 CGPA (or 55%+).
- UPSC eligibility: graduation only, but service preferences and topper recognition heavily favour 8.0+ CGPA.
- GATE / CAT placements: PSU recruitment via GATE typically requires 60%+ overall (CGPA 6.5+); IIM admissions normalise CGPA across boards.
- US grad school: 7.0/10 CGPA (≈ 3.0/4.0) is the floor for most universities; 8.0+ for competitive programmes; 8.5+ for Ivy-equivalent admissions.
For percentage conversion, AICTE recommends Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Anna University, KTU, and a few others publish institute-specific slabs — always verify with your transcript office before quoting on applications.
Frequently Asked Questions — India
What is a good CGPA in India?
On the 10-point scale: 7.5+ qualifies for First Class with Distinction at most universities. 8.0+ is competitive for PSU recruitment and government exams. 8.5+ keeps Ivy-equivalent US grad school options open. 9.0+ is in topper territory at IITs and IIM PGP.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
AICTE formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, 8.4 CGPA × 9.5 = 79.8%. Anna University uses its own slab; KTU specifies (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Always check your transcript regulations — institutions vary.
Is 7.5 CGPA First Class?
7.5 CGPA equals roughly 71% via the AICTE formula. At universities that use the AICTE rule, this typically qualifies as First Class with Distinction (75%+ equivalent). At universities using their own conversion, it may be just First Class. Confirm with your transcript office.
What is SGPA vs CGPA?
SGPA (Semester GPA) is the weighted average of grade points for a single semester only. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all semesters completed so far. CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(all credits).
Why does my IIT use AA, AB, BB instead of A, B, C?
IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, and a few others use a two-letter grading scheme (AA, AB, BB, BC etc.) to allow finer-grained distinctions than the single-letter system. The cumulative scale is still 10-point — AA = 10, AB = 9, etc.
